DIY Shelter: Tools & Materials

Read through the Tools and Materials list and make sure that you have everything you need on-hand before starting this project.

All Weather Cat Shelter (With Flaps)

During a shelter check in 2019, I rescued a kitten named Tabitha. She helped me realize I could do better and The Tabitha Project was born.

Step 1: Remove the Left Handle

Use the reciprocating (rotating) saw* to remove the handle on your left when you are looking at the back of the cooler.

Step 2: Drill Holes for the Exits

Work slowly to make sure that the holes are not larger than intended, so that the PVC pipe for the exits will fit snugly later.

Step 3: Mark and Drill Pilot Holes

The pilot holes and screws are 8" (inches) on center to the exit holes. This will match the snaps we put on the flaps in step 11.

Step 5: Align and Attach Exits

Since exits need to be placed at the best angle to allow for water run-off, I recommend that you do a test run before using adhesives.

Step 6: Seal the Interior and Air Dry

In order to verify the alignment is correct do not seal both sides of the pipe at the same time; create the seal on the interior first.
